Continental Drips
No need for chasing to fit our door canopies
This blog highlights the benefits of the continental drip flashing system used by standard on our door canopy designs. Fundamentally, its use helps to direct water away from buildings and allows installation without cutting or chasing into walls, simplifying the installation process. We use this system because it enables our canopies to be fitted on a wide variety of substrates including stone, brick and ornate rendering, providing versatile and non-invasive installation options while maintaining effective water protection.
It is fair to say that some of our customers select to have our optional step flashings with their door canopy, which does require the wall to be cut and chased. The image below shows an example of this, which has been done with matching zinc flashings:
This blog, however, concentrates on continental drip flashings and the benefits this system gives.
[Please refer to our installation guides for full details of how to install our canopies.]
Continental drip flashings are an essential feature on our canopies. As already mentioned, its use prevents water ingress by directing water away from the building and means the canopies can be installed without the need for cutting into walls. The installation is simplified because only a proprietary sealer is required between the wall and the canopy, avoiding the traditional cut and chase method.
The two images below show how the drip flashing is formed by curving the top edge of the upstand element of the canopy.
The below examples showcase installations on a variety of substrates. The first shows a natural zinc canopy installed onto the irregular surface of a stone wall.
The next picture shows a close up of the continental drip flashing on this modern style canopy, which has been installed onto a brick house.
The below Waterloo canopy has been installed onto an ornately rendered archway. Again, no cutting or chasing was required, so the canopy could be installed easily without disturbing the archway.
The final example shows a bespoke Blenheim canopy. On this occasion, we did taper the black wooden mock Tudor cladding, but otherwise the canopy was installed directly onto the brick wall.
An installation guide and video is available on our Installation Instructions page on our website. The design of our canopies means that they can be installed by your own local builder, but we are always happy to talk to you about both supplying and fitting your canopy.
