Bespoke

Alongside its range of handmade zinc and copper canopy, veranda and porch designs, ZAC are often commissioned to undertake refurbishment work and to manufacture bespoke designs. This has ranged from replacing zinc and copper structures, such as domes, facades and canopies on listed buildings, to creating bespoke and specialist architectural features.

Zinc and Copper Ornamental Features

Replicating Original Architectural Features

Our refurbishment work is often carried out for properties in conservation areas and on listed buildings, where exact duplicates of the original architectural features are required. We proudly provide the expertise in the traditional methods used to fabricate zinc and copper and would typically work closely with both English Heritage and local conservation officers to help ensure the perfect result for our customers.

The below shows the original canopy roof on a porch over the entrance of a listed Georgian property within a conservation area in London alongside the replacement made by ZAC. Although the original canopy roof didn’t look like copper, investigations showed that it was and that a bitumen coating had been applied at some point to try and extend the lifespan of the original covering.

The first picture below is the original canopy roof on a property in Calne, Wiltshire. The original roof would have been natural zinc, but looks to have been painted at some point. We were asked to create the new canopy roof as it would have originally looked.

New Stunning Architectural Features

Sometimes customers have very exacting needs for their projects that require a completely bespoke design. Below are examples of features designed and made by ZAC, the first showing a new canopy entrance on a magnificent Elizabethan building.

The first photograph below shows the original concrete lintel and pipework on a porch entrance. ZAC worked with the customer to come up with a design for a canopy roof, made with natural zinc, to cover the porch. The customer also chose to have lighting added into the soffit of the canopy.

Contemporary and Modern Projects

Our design team is often presented with the challenge of coming up with contemporary and modern designs for a range of projects. In some cases, the design brief comes with diagrams or CAD drawings, but, in the majority of cases, the designs are inspired by the architecture of the property and come about after discussions between the customer and our design team.

The below architecturally designed newly built house has a mix of traditional and modern features. The customer wanted to add an open porch that blended in with the modern look of the windows and doors. With its sharp crisp lines, subtle square stanchions and anthra zinc roof, the below contemporary porch was agreed, adding the perfect finishing touch.

Zinc and Copper Ornamental Features

Many of our customers select to have fleur-de-lis end caps on their canopy roofs, but we have also been commissioned to create much more intricate and impressive ornamental features. From the elaborate copper pineapples made for a customer’s bespoke porch to finials, flowers and spheres, our tinsmiths embrace the challenge. Depending on the feature, our ornamental designs are either formed from solid pieces or sheets of zinc or copper and are all made to order. We are happy to create replicas of existing ornamental features and to make bespoke new designs.

The pictures below are examples of some of the features we have created and starts with one of our fleur-de-lis end caps.
