About Us

A Short History

The Zinc and Copper Canopy Company (ZAC) was established in 2017 by Peter Young and Arthur Biden, drawing on their extensive expertise in metalwork and roofing. With over 40 years’ combined experience in crafting exquisite zinc and copper work, as well as working on diverse roofing projects, their goal was to create door canopies that not only exuded style, but also embodied sustainability, durability, and the highest quality. Embracing both traditional and modern architectural aesthetics, their designs seamlessly complement period properties and contemporary buildings while accommodating various substrates and architectural styles. To ensure ease of installation, ZAC utilises lightweight mild steel frames. Beyond door canopies, ZAC has also introduced a bespoke range of porches, verandas, and window canopies in response to customer demand. These exceptional products are meticulously handcrafted by our team of skilled metal fabricators and tinsmiths, combining the latest machinery with traditional artisanal techniques. ZAC’s dedication to delivering excellence extends to creating individually tailored window and porch canopies, all carefully crafted in our workshop.

Design Team

ZAC’s Design Team is responsible for the meticulous creation of each canopy. Beginning with the identified challenge, such as developing a canopy for a charming cottage with a low roofline, our designers utilise computer-based tools and draw inspiration from existing canopies in our range. Through this iterative process, they overlay canopy images onto photographs of various properties to ensure suitability. Valuable insights from fabricators and tinsmiths contribute to the practicality and functionality of the design. Once the team reaches a consensus, a prototype is manufactured in our factory, allowing for further refinement and fine-tuning. Only when everyone is fully satisfied does the design receive final approval and become part of our range.

Our Tinsmiths and Metal Fabricators

Our Tinsmiths and Metal Fabricators are located in our Croydon factory. They skillfully manufacture every component used in our canopies, porches, and verandas. Depending on the project, they work with a variety of raw materials including sheet steel, solid mild steel bars, zinc, and copper. Our experienced sheet metal workers shape the frames for our canopies using 3mm sheet steel. After cutting, bending, and curving the metal to fit the design, the frames are welded to ensure a sturdy structure. They are then sanded to a smooth finish and powder coated in the colour chosen by our customers.

Similarly, our porches, verandas, and brackets are crafted by our in-house fabricators using solid, mild steel bars. These bars are meticulously cut, bent, and curved to form the different parts of the framework or bracket before being welded, sanded, and powder coated. In some cases, due to the size of our verandas and porches, the final installation of the framework is done on-site. Our canopies can be clad in either zinc or copper, which arrive at our factory as sheets or coils. Our talented tinsmiths skillfully mould and bend the zinc or copper to fit our canopies using traditional techniques and state-of-the-art machinery. They expertly seam the metal together and solder it by hand as needed.
